SPOKANE, Wash. — It wasn’t a typical Monday afternoon in the gym at Rogers High School as over a hundred area Native American youth crowded together to learn about sports, and life, from a who’s-who list of athletes and celebrities.
Rise Above is a program founded by Jaci McCormack to reach out to Native youth to show them the path of leading a good life. This year the clinic was at Rogers High School thanks to the encouragement of former Rogers Pirate and Chicago Bear Levi Horn.
Among the coaches in this years clinic were Basketball Hall-of-Famer Lenny Wilkens, NBA all-star Detlef Schrempf, multiple gold medal winning women’s basketball players, Academy Award winning actor Danny Glover, and long time civil rights activist and former mayor of Berkely, California Gus Newport.
The kids were allowed to learn about basketball, volleyball, soccer, and football in the event.
